Great Divide Hercules Double IPA - click to enlarge

Origin: Colorado.

Style: American Double.

Alcohol Content: 9.1%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

Brewery notes: "Hoppier, maltier and with more alcohol than a standard IPA, Hercules Double IPA definitely is not for the faint of heart. Hercules Double IPA is, however, an elixir fit for the gods. A brash but creamy wonder, Hercules pours a deep orange-coppery color, forming substantial lace in the glass. Hercules Double IPA delivers a huge amount of piney, floral, and citrusy hop aroma and flavor from start to finish. A hefty backbone of nutty, toffee-like malt character balances Hercules’ aggressive, punchy hop profile. 85 IBU's."

Brewery notes: "Crack open Yeti Imperial Stout's sophisticated sibling - Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout. Although these beers come from the same clan, they have entirely different personalities. Aging on a blend of French and toasted oak chips infuses a subtle oak and vanilla character into Yeti’s already intense chocolate, roasted coffee malt flavor and hugely assertive hop profile. 75 IBU's"

Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout - click to enlarge

An almost viscous, inky-black brew, Yeti opens with a massive, roasty, chocolate, coffee malt flavor that eventually gives way to rich toffee and burnt caramel notes. Packed with an enormous quantity of American hops, Yeti’s hop profile reveals a slightly citrusy, piney, and wonderfully dry hoppy finish. 75 IBU's."

Alcohol Content: 7.6%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B.

This is a new arrival, and there is very limited quantity available. Brewery notes: "For the past couple of years, we've been working with several strains of brettanomyces (wild yeast). We found one and deemed it the best for it's tart flavor and funky, fruity aroma. Adding black mission figs for a subtle jammy aspect, hibiscus flowers for an herbal bouquet and hazy sunset hue, and white pepper for a bit of spicy twang, we've created FIFTEEN - a unique drinking experience inspired by the wild farmhouse ales of Belgium. Though immensely complex today, more flavors will emerge with time, so throw a few bottles in your cellar for future celebrations. 19.2 IBU's."

Brewery notes: "Copper color. The Kaiser once said, "Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world." If the Kaiser and his significant other had tipped this bottle, we'd all be "sprechenden Deutsch!" We took all that is good in a traditional Oktoberfest - gorgeous, deep copper sheen, massive malty backbone and spicy, floral, pungent noble hops - then intensified each into this, an Imperial Oktoberfest. 24 IBU's."

Todd Alström, Beer Advocate review: "A dark brown beer with a creamy off-white head; good retention. Aroma was incredible with a complex floral, herbal, citrus and woody nose. There is a bit of fruitiness in the flavor. A mild herbal bitterness helps balance some of the sweetness, but still quite sweet and sticky. Alcohol is very well concealed. A good amount of malts and barley give the beer a sweet taste that does an excellent job of masking the alcohol. Naturally fermented."

Stone Brewing Arrogant Bastard Ale $4.99/22 ounce bottle

Stone Brewing Arrogant Bastard Ale - click to enlarge

Origin: California.

Style: American Strong Ale.

First introduced in November, 1997, this is an aggressive beer. Hugely complex, deep reddish brown, frothy and stick, there's a lot going on between the hops and malt in this brew. Beer Advocate Todd Alström says, "Medium bodied, yet rich, full and complex. Smooth, especially as it warms. Big malty sweetness with caramel, chocolate and toasted/roasted flavours. Alcohol prickliness teases the palate then the brew kicks its ass with an assertive hop profile. It's raw, coarse, a bit prickly itself, mildly rind-like. Helps to balance the huge malt flavours. Style: American IPA.

Alcohol Content: 6.5%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

From Oskar Blue's Cajun Grill & Brewery in Lyons, Colorado. Brewery notes: " Dale's Pale Ale is America's first hand-canned craft beer. It's an assertive but deftly balanced beer (somewhere between an American pale ale and an India Pale Ale) brewed with hefty amounts of European malts and American hops. It features a merengue-like head, a copper color, and a hoppy nose, thanks to a big post-boil addition of Centennial hops. To complement its hoppy first impression, Dale's also sports a rich middle of malts and hops, and a bracing finish. Dale's features 65 International Bittering Units." OMG! A great beer from a CAN!
