Maredsous 10 Triple - click to enlarge

Origin: Belgium.

Obvious bitter flavors from the yeast, hops and grain. Clusters of flavors hit at once with a nutty yeast, dry veggie hop, husk astringent grain and a peppery alcohol. A bold but boisterous triple that is over the top in some aspects, astringencies bring this brew down. Other than that is it not a beer not to shy from. Innis and Gunn Original Rum Cask Finish Oak Aged Beer - click to enlarge

Origin: Scotland.

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy.

Alcohol Content: 7.4%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B.

Brewery notes: "We are delighted to present this unique limited bottling of Innis & Gunn finished in oak barrels which previously contained navy rum. Maturation in special oak barrels imparts Navy rums with the sweet, spicy character for which they are renowned. We have long wondered what flavors might be imparted to our beer by finishing it in these same barrels and earlier this year we decided to find out. We brewed a special batch of Innis & Gunn beer and matured it in oak for 60 days. Every single drop spent half of that time in American oak barrels before being refilled into selected navy rum barrels to finish the lengthy maturation. Once the beer had absorbed the unique character the barrels were emptied, the beer blended and then maturation continued for a further 47 days until all of the flavors had married together and mellowed. We think the result is absolutely delicious! Surprisingly light in texture, soft fruits and malt fill the palate, balanced by a lively spiciness, A mellow oak background emerges with time. Malt to the fore with the spicy notes softening leaving a pleasant lingering sweetness."

Brooklyn Brewery Local 2 - click to enlarge

Origin: New York.

Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale.

Alcohol Content: 9.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

"Styled after dark Belgian ale, this domestic craft beer from Brooklyn Brewery is made with European malts and hops, brown sugar, wildflower honey and orange zest. It is bottled in an impressively sculpted, Champagne-like cork-and-wire-cage-adorned 750 ml. bottle. Belgian-style ales are meant to savor and share. The Local 2 goes great with roasted vegetables and seasonal braised game. It’s available year-round, but this is the season that it shines the brightest. In the glass: Deep reddish mahogany color with a tan head. Aromas of caramel on buttered dark toast, honey and orange peel follow through on a round, foamy entry to a fruity yet dry, medium to full body with tangy apple skin, dried citrus and toffee notes. Finishes with a nice, grassy hop and pepper-accented fade. A rock solid food beer." - Chicago Tribune.

Origin: New York.

Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale.

Alcohol Content: 9.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: A-.

Brewery notes: "While we've never come right out and said that Brooklyn Local 1 is our version of the Belgian Saison, we're certainly not going to argue with America's cocktail expert David Wondrich. And certainly not while he's saying things like "(Local 1) could be the most elegant beer ever made." In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we forge barley malt and hops from Germany, aromatic raw sugar from Mauritius and yeast from Belgium into Brooklyn Local 1. Behind the full golden color you'll find an alluring aroma, a dynamic complex of flavors. Belgian flair, Brooklyn fortitude and a dusting of our special yeast. To create this beer, we use the old technique of 100% bottle re-fermentation, a practice now rare even in Europe. It gives this beer a palate of unusual depth."

Origin: Kentucky.

Style: American Double Stout.

Alcohol Content: 8.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B+.

What sets this brew apart is being aged in Jefferson's Reserve small batch barrels for approximately 60 days. The malt sweetness is perfectly balanced by the roast barley and a nice hint of bourbon flavor and aroma. This bourbon barrel stout was first brewed December 22, 2005. The color is deep dark brown/black with a frothy cappucino head. The aromas reveal hints of bourbon along with roasted notes and some vanilla. Chocolate reveals itself on the tongue along with some bourbon sweetness, and whiffs of smokiness arrive in the aftertaste. This is not a heavy stout; in fact the brewery describes it as silky.

Aiko Strong $2.69/500 ml. bottle

Origin: Lithuania.

Style: Euro Strong Lager.

Alcohol Content: 9.5%.

Beer Advocate Rating: C+.

Importer notes: "Pours a nice clear amber color with a hint of orange and little white head. Smell of malt and barley. On the tongue and in the mouth, the beer is crisp and refreshing. There is a bit of fruitiness in the flavor. A mild herbal bitterness helps balance some of the sweetness, but still quite sweet and sticky. Alcohol is very well concealed. A good amount of malts and barley give the beer a sweet taste that does an excellent job of masking the alcohol. Naturally fermented."

Style: Doppelbock.

Alcohol Content: 8.0%.

Beer Advocate Rating: B-.

Brewery notes: "Andygator, a creature of the swamp, is a unique high-gravity brew made with pale malt, German lager yeast, and German Perle hops. Unlike other high-gravity brews, Andygator is fermented to a dry finish with a slightly sweet flavor and subtle fruit aroma. Reaching an alcohol strength of 8% by volume, it is a Helles Dopplebock. You might find it goes well with fried foods. It pairs well with just about anything made with crawfish. Some like it with a robust sandwich! Andygator also is a good aperitif and easily pairs with gorgonzola and creamy blue cheeses. 25 IBU's."
