and thought we would take a break from serious commentary by running some quotes on wine and spirits that we’ve collected over the past couple of years.

I cook with wine. Sometimes I even add it to the food. -W.C. Fields

Champagne for our real friends and real pain for our sham friends.

What contemptible scoundrel stole the cork from my lunch? -W.C. Fields

Here’s to the wine we drink, and here’s to the food we eat.
Here’s to our wives and sweethearts — let’s hope they never meet!

Wine improves with age. The older I get, the better I like it!

Water separates the people of the world. Wine unites them.

Wine Quotes: In Wine There Is Truth - Ed Young's Wine Letter September 2007

Some say the glass is half empty. Some say the glass is half full. I say, “Are you going to drink that”?

I only drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I am not hungry, and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it — unless I’m thirsty. -Lily Bollinger

If a life of wine, women, and song becomes too much — give up the singing.

Wine gladdens the heart. In our gladness we see beyond the ugliness and misery that stun our world. Our eyes open now to unnoticed grace, blessings until now unseen, and the promise of goodness we can bring to flower.

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading. -Henny Youngman

Sometimes, when I reflect back on all the wine I drink, I feel shame. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the vineyards and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn’t drink this wine, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, “It is better that I drink this wine and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver”. -Jack Handy

Wine Quotes: In Wine There Is Truth - Ed Young's Wine Letter September 2007

God made man, frail as a bubble; God made love, love made trouble; God made the vine, was it a sin, that man made wine to drown trouble in?

I take life with a grain of salt — and a wedge of lime and a shot of tequila.

God in his goodness sent the grapes, to cheer both great and small; little fools will drink too much, and great fools not at all.

A toast: May those that love us, love us; And those that don’t love us, may God turn their hearts. And if he doesn’t turn their hearts, may he turn their ankles so we’ll know them by their limping.

To eternity: May it last forever!

Reality is an illusion that occurs due to a lack of wine.

“In vino veritas” (In wine there is truth)

Wine Quotes: In Wine There Is Truth - Ed Young's Wine Letter September 2007

A mind of the caliber of mine cannot derive its nutriment from cows. -George B. Shaw

“Here’s looking at you, kid”. -Humphrey Bogart to Ingrid Bergman, Casablanca (Veuve Clicquot)

As much as wine has play’d the infidel; And robb’d me of my Robe of Honor — Well, I often wonder what the vintners buy, one half so precious as the stuff they sell. -Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, #95

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest cells first. In this way, the regular consumption of alcohol eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That’s why we always feel smarter after a few glasses of wine.

Wine is poetry in a bottle. -Clifton Fadiman

The horse and mule live 30 years, and know nothing of wines and beers. The goat and sheep at 20 die, and never taste of scotch or rye. The cow drinks water by the ton, and at 18 is mostly done. The dog at 15 cashes in, without the aid of rum or gin. The cat in milk and water soaks, and then in 12 short years it croaks. The modest, sober, bone-dry hen, lays eggs for nogs and dies at 10. All animals are strictly dry; They sinless live, and swiftly die. But sinful, ginful, rum-soaked men, survive for three score and ten. And some of us, the mighty few, stay pickled til we’re 92!
