Marquis Philips R Wines Roogle Red 2006

Marquis Philips R Wines Roogle Red 2006 10.99/750 ml.
As Robert Parker's Jay Miller put it, "This is an awesome value". The allotment is very finite on this one, so you had better buy it by the case now!! ($9.99 per bottle in case lots). The team of marketing genius Dan Philips and wine maker Chris Ringland cut through the cluttered wine battlefield with a winning, seriously good, fruit-driven red blend. Parker's rating is 90 points. Jay Miller, reviewer, went on to say, "The 2006 Red is composed of 50% Shiraz, 30% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. It was aged in seasoned French and American oak for 12 months. Dark ruby-colored, it offers attractive aromas of cedar, cassis, blueberry, and plum. Plush and fruit-driven on the palate, this is a ripe, tasty wine for casual quaffing with burgers and pizza over the next 4-6 years."

Marquis Philips R Wines Roogle Riesling 2007 10.99/750 ml.
This may just put Riesling back on the map. We expect most American and German rieslings to be too sweet for most occasions, and those from Alsace and Australia are typically bone dry and not what we expect for a riesling. Roogle Riesling gets it right with perfect balance, almost dry but with just enough residual sugar to coax a smile out of anyone. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 90 points. Reviewer Jay Miller's comments: "The 2007 Riesling is light straw-colored with a lovely perfume of mineral, spring flowers, and honeysuckle with a hint of tropical fruits in the background. Just off-dry (10 grams residual sugar), round, and intensely flavored, this is very sexy Riesling at a great price. Could this be the booty-call wine of the year?" The allotment is small. There won't be more until next year. Buy it now for the rest of the year.

Marquis Philips R Wines Roogle Shiraz 2006 10.99/750 ml.
Here's another amazing value from the house of Dan Philips and Chris Ringland. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90 points. Review Jay Miller's comments: "The 2006 Shiraz was aged for 12 months in seasoned French and American oak. It is purple-colored and offers up a big whiff of cedar, blueberry, blackberry, and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, ripe and sweet, it has enough structure to improve for 2-3 years in the bottle but who is going to defer their gratification? Drink it over the next 4-6 years." Compared to the blend, Roogle Red, the Shiraz shows more oak and has a bit more "serious" personality. The allotment is tight! Don't wait.

R Wines Strong Arms Shiraz 2006

R Wines Strong Arms Shiraz 2006 11.99/750 ml.
If you pay attention to QPR (quality-price-ratio), and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, then you know 91 points at under $12 is hard to find. Here it is, but only while it lasts. Reviewer Jay Miller's comments: "The 2006 Shiraz is composed of 46% McLaren Vale, 44% Riverland, and 10% Barossa Valley fruit. It was aged in seasoned French and American oak for 12 months. Opaque purple-colored, it has a nose of cedar, spice box, and blueberry. Fruit-driven, supple-textured, rich, and easygoing, the wine has remarkable class for its giveaway price. It actually has 2-3 years of aging potential but no one that I know is going to defer their gratification." We all tried it and agree! This is a breakthrough.

Plume Bleue Grenache Syrah 2006

Plume Bleue Grenache Syrah 2006 13.99/750 ml.
A new arrival from France, imported by Hand Picked Selections (Dan Kravitz), produced by Domaine du Pegau, maker of high end ($90+/-) Chateauneuf Du Pape. Here's "an everyday wine we only wish there was more of. Light, lively, and fruit driven, this blend of 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache is casual food-friendly, and would make a perfect pair to grilled lamb or pork chops, herbed tomato salad...just about anything you can eat outdoors!" - Maggie Fox, Gary's Wine and Marketplace.

Manifesto! Sauvignon Blanc 2006

Manifesto! Sauvignon Blanc 2006 11.99/750 ml.
"Gardenias and a rush of grapefruit and lemon zest fill the nose on a mineral foundation. The flavors reflect the nose, with tart citrus, pineapple and mouthwatering acidity and a lingering finish. This Manifesto! is also good for the conscience. The winery donates a portion of bottling line proceeds to charity, worker housing, Latino education in the Napa Valley and clean to clean drinking water."

Bodegas Alto Almanzora Este 2005

Bodegas Alto Almanzora Este 2005 9.99/750 ml.
A proprietary blend from Valle del Almanzora, Spain. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 89 points (reviewer Jay Miller). "The 2005 Alto Almanzora Este is a blend of 60% Monastrell, 10% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha with the balance 3 other varieties. The wine was aged for 6 months in French and American oak. Opaque purple-colored, the wine exhibits a surprisingly complex array of mineral, mushroom, black cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with gobs of ripe fruit, this easy drinking wine has a firm, lengthy finish. At the asking price, this is an awesome value. Drink it over the next 2 years (although the adventurous might want to cellar a case or two for a couple of years and be pleasantly surprised by its evolution)."

Bodegas Castano Monastrell 2006 10.99/750 ml.
The grape is Monastrell, also known as Mourvedre and Mataro, and the region is Yecla, known for producing rich meaty Monastrell wines. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate 90 points (reviewer Jay Miller).

Las Rocas de San Alejandro Garnacha 2005 13.99/750 ml.
The grape is Grenache and the region is Calatayud, Aragon, in Spain. Jay Miller of Robert Parker's Wine Advocate says, "The unoaked 2005 Las Rocas Garnacha is sourced from low yielding vineyards ranging in age from 70-100 years. It gives up attractive aromas of kirsch, raspberries, pepper, and damp earth. This is followed by a broad, full-flavored wine with a supple texture and no hard edges. Drink this pleasure-packed wine over the next 2-3 years." (reviewed February 2007)

Mad Housewife California Varietals 2006 7.99/750 ml.

Arido Mendoza Malbec 2006 11.99/750 ml.

Chono Central Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 14.99/750 ml.
"This outstanding Cabernet hails from Espinoza's family vineyard, with vines that were planted by his father and raised organically. This high-altitude plot in the Maipo Valley gets everything it needs: temperate weather and fertile, loamy soils. Forward red and black fruits are lush and mouth coating, while chewy tannins offer a powerful grip. Aged 10 months in barrique. Utterly captivating."

Clava Casablanca Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2006 12.99/750 ml.
"Diamond-cut and dazzlingly pure, this Sauvignon Blanc represents the finest in natural winemaking in the Casablanca Valley. If you are a fan of New Zealand Sauvignon, this flavorful and fresh white will surely win your affection (if not on price alone!) Delicious perfumes of pear and tangerine waft over a lush nose, while juicy, brisk and tantalizing flavors of ripe apple and grapefruit keep the mouth alive."

Robert Parker himself gave this one 89 points and said, "The 2005 Mano a Mano offers an inky/purple color along with more fullness and body as well as wonderful freshness (a characteristic of this vintage). Meaty, dense, and chewy, this beauty certainly over-delivers for its price point."

Yard Dog Australian Red or White Blends Vintage 2006 8.99/750 ml.

Panarroz Jumilla 2006

Panarroz Jumilla 2006 10.99/750 ml.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate has given this wine 90-90-88 points for the '03-'04-'05 vintages. Last year Parker's reviewer, Pierre Rovani said, "A blend of Mourvedre, Grenache, and Syrah, the 2005 Panarroz is a wonderful value. It bursts from the glass with leather-laced black fruits. On the palate, this medium-bodied effort is big, spicy, reveals loads of depth, and has a tannic rusticity that screams out for barbequed steaks." Jerry says the '06 is just as good if not better than the '05. It's under $10 by the case!
