Bandwagon Monterey Chardonnay 2009 11.99/750 ml.
This is a new wine and label from Tony Leonardini, the volunteer fireman from St. Helena and winemaker who has also produced the labels "Volunteer" and "Two- Faced". If the name Leonardini sounds familiar, think Whitehall Lane. Jeff Warzynski says "put this Chardonnay at the top of your list, and be amazed at the low price for the high quality". This Chardonnay was sourced from the Santa Lucia Highlands in Monterey County. The wine was made without any oak fermentation and no malolactic fermentation either. Wine Garage of Calistoga describes it this way, "This is a crisp, clean representation of pure cold climate Chardonnay grapes. The nose reminds me of jasmine flowers right after a rainstorm. On the palate I get honeysuckle, papaya, and Meyer lemons. The wine is rich you may detect some butter, but believe me, those flavors are just from the pure Chardonnay fruit characteristics." Winery price is $17.
Bandwagon Monterey Pinot Noir 2009 13.99/750 ml.
This is a new wine and label from Tony Leonardini, the volunteer fireman from St. Helena and winemaker who has also produced the labels "Volunteer" and "Two- Faced". If the name Leonardini sounds familiar, think Whitehall Lane. Jeff Warzynski says "put this Pinot Noir at the top of your list, and be amazed at the low price for the high quality". Calistoga's Wine Garage offered the 2008 vintage to their wine club, and raved about it, saying, "Red fruits, such as strawberry, cranberry, and pomegranate shine on both the nose and the first sip. Multilayered, complex, and very well-balanced, this Pinot Noir has all the right components that will make your sum- mer alfresco dinner shine." Winery price is $20.
Apothic Red 2008 8.99/750 ml.
Yes, this is a wine brought to the table by Gallo, but even Robert Parker himself wrote glowing things about the 2008 vintage of this red blend. Giving it 87 points (amazing at this price), Parker wrote, "This is one of the greatest bargains I have ever tasted from California. A hedonist's dream, this fruit-bomb exhibits loads of berry fruit, pepper, and spice, silky tannins, and an attractive mouthfeel. Neither heavy nor overly alcoholic." Apothic is a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon that comes from primarily Lodi as well as Sonoma, the Central Coast, and Napa.

Cool Woods Barossa Shiraz 2008 13.99/Liter
Here is a Shiraz to like. First, you're getting a Liter for what you would expect to pay for 750 ml. That's 1/3 more wine, or alternatively, you get the same number of glasses per bottle, but the pour is much more generous! And this Shiraz is fantastic, by unanimous decree of the Frugal's wine team. It over-delivers. Tasting notes: "The nose is quite elegant and of a cool climate; with plenty of Shiraz spiciness. The palate is medium weighted with rich confection like jubey fruit. The palate is sweet and lush with velvety tannins. It finished with good length of sweet fruit and a hint of oak."

This is Fairview Vintner Charles Back's fanciful blend of Syrah (61%), Cinsaut (14%), Mourvedre (13%), Grenache (8%), and Carignan (4%), sourced from coastal regions of South Africa. Cote 125 Corbières Red Blend 2007 13.99/750 ml.
The 2007 vintage for the Southern Rhone Valley in France is the best in over a decade, rating a 98 overall by Robert Parker.
